Ellipsoid Mirror

Made from six pieces of box-joined solid black walnut, this mirror’s frame is neither steamed bent nor a bent lamination, but rather a circle cut from dimensional lumber. While perfectly round, the profile of the wood is elliptical, or rather, when hung, it is a horizontally oriented ellipse in section. Care is taken with the joinery of this piece such that, once carved ellipsoid, the individual boxes forming the joints are almost identical in size despite the vastly changing slope of the profile’s curve. The depth of this frame creates a reflection of itself in the mirror, so the viewer not only has one’s reflection framed by the walnut frame, but also by the reflection of the frame itself.
